Giuseppe and Maria arrived at Ellis Island with high hopes for a promising, new start. These hopes became reality with the purchase of 150 acres of fertile farmland in southern New Jersey. From asparagus to sweet potatoes, vegetables of every sort were harvested by hand and sent to local produce markets. In the mid 1960’s, machine-harvested tomatoes became a vital part of the farm. Abundant yields were sent to all major canning corporations, including Hunt’s, Progresso, Campbell’s Soups and the family-owned processing plant, PMC Canning. Sam Vasta, Giuseppe’s son, continued the farming tradition created by his father.
In 1995, devoting 10 acres and countless hours, Joe Vasta introduced bentgrass sod into the family farm and Vasta Farms Sod was created. Today, Vasta Farms Sod has grown to 100 acres, comprised of numerous top quality varieties. Joe, his wife Anne and their daughter Casey continue to operate the farm on the same principles of quality begun three generations ago.
